Nelson Bros provides a range of quality funeral merchandise that may be purchased by families. These include:

Coffins and Caskets
In 1858, Robert Simeon Nelson was a cabinet-maker and undertaker in the Victorian country town of Linton. He produced coffins and become the local funeral director. Nelson Bros continued to make its own coffins and caskets until the 1970s. Today we source the best products available from Victoria, interstate and overseas.

Coffins and caskets are produced from a variety of materials. Traditionally solid timber, they may also be made from materials such as metal or particleboard (with or without veneer).

Our range of coffins and caskets vary in shape, size, colour and material. All coffins and caskets include personally engraved name plate and handling. Nelson Bros has selection rooms at all of our funeral homes. We recommend that you personally select the coffin or casket you require.

Custom coffins and caskets are available on request and are priced accordingly.

What is the difference between a coffin and a casket?

The difference is purely the shape. A coffin is tapered at the foot and head end, and comes out at the shoulders. A casket is anything that is not coffin-shaped, generally rectangular in shape but often octagonal or oblong.

Cremation Memorials
Typically the crematorium will provide the cremated remains in their own basic container. Should you wish to place the cremated remains in a different Memorial (or urn), we have a range from which you may select.

These urns are made in a variety of materials which include:

  • hand spun pottery
  • eternal bronze, pewter or graphite
  • naturally biodegradable
  • solid timber

We are also able to personalise the Cremation Memorial for you with the full name of the deceased, the date of birth and date of death. Personalisation may be by engraving, name plate of hand-painted, depending upon the type of urn.

Memorial Book
Many families choose to have a Memorial Book at the funeral. This enables mourners to sign the book at the funeral to give their respects. Nelson Bros provides lecterns at the funeral to enable everyone to sign.

We also have Vietnamese and Chinese language Memorial Books available.

Temporary Grave Markers
After a burial takes place, it may take a number of weeks before monumental works or securing a plaque commence. As a result, some families choose to have a temporary grave marker to identify the grave until the permanent memorial is ready.

Nelson Bros can provide this for you. Our temporary grave markers include:

  • White Cross
  • Buddhist Marker
  • Russian Orthodox Cross
  • Greek Orthodox Cross

Crucifix and Crucifix Mounts
Some Christian families choose to have a crucifix or cross placed on top of the coffin or casket. Nelson Bros provides a range of different crosses and crucifixes to suit your needs.

Following the funeral, you may remove the crucifix from the casket to have as your own memorabilia. Should you also require a crucifix mount, we can provide this for you.
